Activate Learning is presented by ABC Life Literacy Canada and is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Adult Learning, Literacy & Essential Skills program.
There are numerous benefits for both employer and employee, such as improvement in workers’ skills and job performance, as well as increases in employment, earnings, job retention, productivity, and costs savings from reduced errors and waste (UPSKILL Health – Technical Report on worker and business outcomes: Social Research and Demonstration Corporation, 2016). According to the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, on average, a one-dollar investment in training returns a benefit to the employer of $1.38 (Apprenticeship – Building a Skilled Workforce for a Strong Bottom Line, R.A. Malatest & Associates Ltd., Canadian Apprenticeship Forum (2006). Read more about the benefits of workplace literacy and essential skills training.
The workshop resources included in the Activate Learning program have been thoroughly researched. We have partnered with curriculum developers and have worked alongside experts in the literacy field to develop UP Skills for Work, Money Matters and ABC Health Matters, and these programs have been run successfully with participants across Canada for a number of years. Our Essential Skills For Life workshops, which are the newest addition to our programming, have also been developed based on research and collaboration, as well as the knowledge that we’ve gathered over the last several decades creating programs for adult learners.
We consistently receive positive feedback from both learners and practitioners on how helpful the workshops have been in building their confidence and making changes in their lives.
A fundamental part of our teaching and learning philosophy is to help create a space where learners feel supported and comfortable to share. In our online training, we teach facilitators how to keep things confidential. We also keep all names and identifiers on our evaluation forms completely confidential. Evaluations are destroyed once the data has been evaluated.
The material is written for literacy level 2, which is a grade 6 to 8 reading level. That said, many of the practitioners who have used our materials have adapted our workbooks to the different needs of their learner. We know there are many types of learners, and there’s no cookie cutter way to present the material. Feel free to reach out to us to talk about how you can adapt it for your learners.
All workshops are completely free to run. We help to coordinate your workshops and ship all materials directly to you at no cost. In fact, we provide host organizations with an honourarium (or salary off-set for employers) for each workshop run, upon receipt of completed learner evaluation forms.
No. You could run each workshop with a big or small group of learners.
You choose when, where and how often to run your workshops. It’s whatever works best for your organization and your learners/employees.
Activate Learning offers 24 potential workshops, but there is no requirement on the number of workshops that you must run to participate in the program.
Workshops range from 90 to 120 minutes. The workshops are designed to be easy to use and can be delivered in the way that best suits the needs of your group. You can complete one of our workbooks in one sitting, or break it up into smaller chunks of time.
You don’t need to be an expert in literacy or workplace skills to facilitate an Activate Learning workshop. In fact, these workshops have been designed in a way that makes it simple for anyone to lead. If you’re interested in hosting a workshop, you likely already have the skills and the drive needed to succeed!
We support all facilitators by providing facilitator training that will walk you through the workshop, prepare you for what to expect, and provide tips to ensure that your workshop is running smoothly. You can also always contact our Project Coordinator with any pre or post workshops questions that you have.
For employers, we do offer the option to have a practitioner lead your workshops.
As many times as you’d like; there is no cap. Some organizations run workshops year-round on a rolling basis; others run a few workshops each year. As long as you send in your completed learner evaluation forms within two weeks of your last workshop, we will send you an honourarium, regardless of how many workshops you host.
If you plan to run your workshops with your own staff or volunteers facilitating, please register at least three weeks before your first scheduled workshop.
We completely understand if you need to shift your workshop dates. If you or a member of your staff is running the workshop, simply let the Activate Learning Project Coordinator know that you have changed your dates. If you are bringing in someone from ABC to run your workshops, let us know as soon as possible so that we can plan accordingly.
If you plan to run your workshops with your own staff or volunteers facilitating, you can provide us with approximate dates and shift them around as needed.
If you have fewer learners that you anticipated, you can still run your workshops. Just let us know so that we know have this for our records.
Yes, absolutely. And yes, any time you plan to use our content, either in whole or in part, that is considered a workshop and we ask that you please take a few minutes to register. We will ship materials to your location once you’ve booked your workshop(s).
